Honens Lab

Honens Lab is a professional development initiative dedicated to supporting the development of the complete artist, spearheaded by 2018 Honens Prize Laureate Nicolas Namoradze. While exceptional pianism remains at its core, today’s musicians require a broad range of skills to build thoughtful, resilient, and sustainable artistic careers. Through masterclasses, seminars, and collaborative learning, Honens Lab explores the artistic, physical, and mental dimensions of music-making.

Launched in 2025 in partnership with Mount Royal University Conservatory, Honens Lab brings together internationally recognized performers, educators, and specialists to share practical insights that complement traditional conservatory training. This year’s edition is shaped by the artists and ideas featured during the 2026 Honens Festival, creating a unique learning experience for emerging pianists and their teachers.

2026 SESSIONS

Tai Chi for Musicians

with Élisabeth Pion
Thursday 10 September, 9 am
TransAlta Pavilion, Taylor Centre for the Performing Arts

Pianist Elisabeth Pion invites musicians to an introductory Tai Chi workshop developed during her Guildhall School of Music & Drama Fellowship. Drawing on six years of Wu Style Tai Chi training, Elisabeth explores how this internal martial art can support musical performance through improved posture, coordination, concentration, breath awareness, and physical wellbeing. Tai Chi helps cultivate calm focus, responsiveness, and balance, while encouraging the “flow state” prized by performers, making it a valuable tool both on and off the stage.
