Welcome to Keys for Newcomers!

Arriving to a new country as a newcomer holds a host of challenges, preventing many experienced musicians and music teachers from practicing their skills and talents. Keys for Newcomers is designed to close that gap by helping experienced piano teachers establish themselves in Canada.

Through your association with Honens and our partners, you will be provided rent free space to conduct private or group lessons, an upright piano or electronic keyboard, seminars on the Canadian systems of piano instruction, and a same-language student referral program.

Eligibility

Support is available for teachers who meet the following criteria:

  1. Newcomers (immigrant, refugee, or evacuee status) who have been in Canada for less than three years;
  2. Experience and ability to teach technique, interpretation, and music theory to students through private or group lessons;
  3. Enjoy teaching children, cultivating a sense of independence and love of music; and
  4. Fluency in any language other than English (knowledge of English is helpful, but not necessary).
  5. Optional: Five years of teaching experience and / or a post graduate degree in piano or music studies is considered an asset.
